Commemorations

Kwibuka Rwanda Memorial honoring victims of genocide and mass atrocities

Commemorations play an important role in preserving historical memory, honoring victims and survivors, and strengthening public understanding of genocide, mass atrocities, human rights, displacement, humanitarian action, and international law. They provide opportunities not only to remember past events, but also to reflect on the lessons they offer for the present and future.

Remembrance preserves memory. Education strengthens understanding. Prevention transforms lessons into action.”

At The Genocide Report, we view remembrance as an essential component of education and prevention. Many atrocities are preceded by patterns of discrimination, exclusion, dehumanization, and impunity that are often overlooked until violence has already escalated. Commemorative observances help preserve the historical record, recognize the experiences of affected communities, and reinforce the importance of accountability, civilian protections, and the prevention of future atrocities.

This section provides educational information about significant international commemorations and observances related to genocide, atrocity prevention, human rights, refugees and displacement, humanitarian action, peacebuilding, and international justice. Some dates commemorate specific historical events, while others recognize broader principles and challenges that continue to affect communities around the world.

The observances included here reflect themes central to The Genocide Report’s mission: remembrance, education, prevention, accountability, and respect for human dignity. Through understanding the past, we strengthen our ability to recognize risks, protect vulnerable populations, and support efforts to prevent future mass violence.

The greatest value of remembrance is not only honoring those who suffered, but ensuring that the lessons of history continue to inform the choices we make today.
